Comment on “Necrotizing Urethritis due to Aerococcus urinae”

چکیده
I read with interest the case report of a man with necrotizing urethritis caused by Aerococcus urinae by Babaeer and coworkers [1]. This report clearly describes a novel and serious clinical presentation of an infection claimed to be caused by Aerococcus urinae. Soft tissue infections in the genital area caused by this organism have been described previously [2, 3] but the case described by Babaeer et al. adds important information on a severe course of infection. However, important questions regarding the aetiology in this case remain unanswered. Species determination of aerococci is a difficult task with many pitfalls [4]. Therefore, it is vital for the reader to know how the identification of A. urinae in the urine culture was made in the present case. Of even greater importance, the reader needs to know if the “Alpha Haemolytic Streptococcus” isolated from tissue and from blood also could represent A. urinae. Without an explanation of the bacteriological investigations of the isolates from this patient, it is hard to determine the bacterial aetiology of the infection described.

Necrotizing Urethritis due to Aerococcus urinae
A 49-year-old male presented to the emergency with hematuria and pain in the shaft of the penis for one day. The patient was found to be in a state of shock. The shaft of the penis and the scrotum were swollen and tender. No skin necrosis was observed and no crepitus was palpable. Serum white count (WBC) was 29.5 × 10(3)/μL. A CT scan showed gas in the corpus spongiosum. Antibiotics were starte...
متن کاملAn initially unidentified case of urinary tract infection due to Aerococcus urinae.
Aerococcus urinae is a microorganism responsible for urinary tract and blood stream infections which are rarely reported in clinical practice. However, it has been proposed that the infrequency of such reports may be partially due to difficulties related to pathogen identification. We present here a case of an elderly male patient with urinary tract infection where A. urinae was initially not i...
متن کاملAerococcus urinae: An Emerging Cause of Urinary Tract Infection in Older Adults with Multimorbidity and Urologic Cancer
Aerococcus urinae is a rare organism isolated from urine cultures. We present a case of an 80 year-old male with bladder cancer and multimorbidity who developed A. urinae infection. A. urinae may cause simple and complicated UTIs, bacteremia, and endocarditis in older adults with multimorbidity, chronic urinary retention, or indwelling catheters. A. urinae treatment should employ penicillin, am...
متن کاملA rare case of perineal abscess caused by aerococcus urinae
Aerococcus urinae, a previously misidentified pathogen, has become increasingly recognized to cause severe and even fatal infections. Aerococcus-related perineal abscess infections have not previously been reported in the literature. Most reported cases of infections caused by Aerococcus are urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and even rare cases of endocarditis. We report an unusual case of ...
متن کاملMALDI-TOF-MS Fingerprinting Provides Evidence of Urosepsis caused by Aerococcus urinae
Urosepsis due to Aerococcus urinae is rare in clinical settings with only a few of reported cases worldwide by 16S rRNA sequencing. Here we report a case of sepsis caused by A. urinae in a 86 year-old male with complicated urinary tract infection which was confirmed through peptide mass fingerprinting of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry.
